In December 2017, Theo's work was the subject of a feature in Cobalt's in-flight magazine, exploring how his paintings turn present-day Larnaca into the backdrop for cinematic, larger-than-life characters.
Characters, larger than life, find themselves in contemporary scenes of present-day Larnaca — an elegant couple on a balcony overlooking the seafront promenade, a mysterious stranger treading through the rain with a bunch of roses in his hand. These are characters that could be taken straight out of a movie set. Do they know each other? What are their plans, thoughts and aspirations?
Theo, on his approach:
I paint the world as I see it, or at least how I would like to see it.
The article also traces the story behind The Last Dance, the fourth and final painting in Theo's series of dancers by the beach — and the quiet ambiguity of the knife hidden behind the male dancer's back.
Cobalt ceased operations in 2018, not long after this issue was published, so this feature now exists only in print — which is why we've kept a copy here.
