Edward Hopper Style Prints

Fine Art Prints by Theo Michael

The painting in a London gallery window that started everything

In the late 1970s, a gallery in London had a framed print of Nighthawks in the window. Theo stopped to look. He stopped every night for weeks, the lit diner, the figures who wouldn't give up their secrets, the feeling of watching a film that had no ending. The print was £150, which was a lot of money then. He bought it anyway. It was the first print he had ever bought.

Three decades later, in 2004, he stood in front of the original painting at the Tate Gallery, Hopper's first major exhibition in Britain. This time he looked at it differently. He could see the brushstrokes, the colour mixing, the technique. And he thought: I could do that. That afternoon he decided to become a painter.

He taught himself. A neighbour who painted in oils showed him the medium. Theo would sketch the composition, his neighbour would show him how to paint it. A lucky find in a second hand shop shaped his style further — an art instruction book by Andrew Loomis called Creative Illustration, out of print and worth £300, picked up for £5. The paintings in this collection are where that journey led.

Each fine art print on archival paper is individually hand signed by Theo Michael in the studio in Larnaca — a small mark that makes it entirely his, and entirely yours.

Canvas prints are produced and shipped by our print partner to ensure the highest quality reproduction. They are not hand signed.

The story behind the print

The Barber Shop At Night is a direct conversation with Hopper. A lit interior, observed from the street through a large window at night, the same device Hopper used in Nighthawks.
The barber. The customer. The knife being sharpened. You are standing outside in the dark, watching a scene that is entirely ordinary and somehow completely charged with unspoken meaning. Theo painted it in 2020, forty years after he first stopped in front of that gallery window in London.

"As one who appreciates the art of Edward Hopper I am drawn to the Theo Michael paintings that capture a moment in time — which for me suggest a pensive melancholy. Alone At The Bar: what is our female subject thinking? Is she waiting for someone? Has she been stood up? Whichever, I am concerned for her well-being. Needless to say I enjoy Theo's style and the art he creates. Continue to tempt me with your periodic emails and latest creations."
