In People In The Sun, Theo Michael engages in a direct dialogue with Edward Hopper’s 1960 work of the same name.

While Hopper’s original figures sat in the stark light of a rural landscape, Theo transplants this collective solitude to the industrial heart of Hamburg’s Harbour.
The soft, organic hills of the original are replaced by the geometric hull of the Crystal Symphony, creating a tension between the human scale and the colossal machinery of modern travel.

The sharp, Mediterranean-influenced shadows anchor the figures in a moment of quiet contemplation, even as the cranes of the shipyard loom in the distance.

Hopper saw solitude in open landscape. Theo finds it in the shadow of the modern world.
