Cyprus — Seen Through a Painter's Eye

Theo Michael was born in Cyprus, left for London as a young man, and returned decades later with a painter's eye sharpened by absence. These paintings are the result — Cyprus seen with both the intimacy of someone who grew up here and the perspective of someone who left and came back.

The collection moves between the vivid colour of the Mediterranean — beaches, harbours, bougainvillea-draped walls, colonial architecture bathed in afternoon light — and the quieter world of monochrome: historical paintings that reach back into Cyprus's past, its old streets, ancient monuments and the people who shaped the island.

Cyprus Through History — Monochrome Oil Paintings

A separate thread runs through the collection — monochrome oil paintings that draw on historical photographs and archive imagery of Cyprus. These works capture Larnaca and Nicosia as they once were: the Athinon Avenue of the 1950s, the old bazaar of Ermou Street, the Pierides Museum in its early years. Painted in tones of grey and sepia, they feel less like reproductions and more like memories.

Each painting is an original oil, available to purchase directly from the studio. Original Cyprus oils from €1,500.
