Fine Art Prints by Theo Michael

Movement, music and the moment

Dance is, as Martha Graham once said, the hidden language of the soul. Theo has spent years trying to catch it on canvas — not the performance, but the feeling underneath it. The abandon. The connection. The way two people can say everything without saying a word.

The painting at the top of this page is a good example of what he is after. Dancing In The Rain owes something to Gene Kelly, but Theo's dancers move differently — heels lifting, legs thrusting outward, hips leading, in the unmistakable style of Greek dance. The rain falls around them and a lantern throws light across the wet street, casting the long shadows that are a signature of his Art Noir style. The weathered pink canopy, the turned-down fedoras, the figures entirely lost in the moment. You can almost hear the music, even in the silence of a painting.

That quality runs through everything in this collection. Whether the setting is a windswept beach, a rain-soaked street, or a shoreline at dusk, the dancers in Theo's work always seem indifferent to the conditions around them. The dance goes on regardless — and that, perhaps, is the point.

Each fine art print on archival paper is individually hand signed by Theo Michael in the studio in Larnaca — a small mark that makes it entirely his, and entirely yours.

Art Noir beach paintings of a couple dancing with a knife by Theo Michael titled The Last Dance

The story behind the print

The Last Dance has an almost literary twist. A woman in red steps towards her partner, the movement between them charged with something unspoken. Then you notice he is holding a knife behind his back.

The question hangs for a moment, and then resolves. This is Greek knife dancing, a ritual performed at weddings and community celebrations, where a man dances with a long blade and eventually holds it between his teeth. It is theatre as much as tradition.

The knife dance was Theo's father's party trick, and earned him considerable local notoriety.
